St. Mary School Renovation and Addition
Located in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Cincinnati, St. Mary Parish desired to renovate and expand its K-8 school, increase its street presence, and improve circulation between the school and church (insert link), including ADA accessibility.
A new, sunken courtyard is the focal point and organizing element of this small, urban site. It provides circulation between school and church as well as accessibility to both from the parking area. It brings light deep into the lower level classrooms and church undercroft.
Designed to increase the school’s street presence, the axial entry aligns with the existing bell tower, a local landmark. Beginning at the street in the form of a new archway, it bridges the sunken court before terminating in the new entrance lobby.
The renovation and addition comprise a new entry, library, computer lab, offices and classrooms fronting the courtyard. It received both AIA Ohio and AIA Cincinnati Design Awards.
