Springfield Museum of Art
The Springfield Museum of Art required an addition to house its expanding permanent collection, support spaces, administrative offices and gift shop as well as renovation of the original building into classrooms, library and multi-purpose event space. The seven new galleries vary in character to suit the art they contain. The curved gallery is acoustically designed as concert space, but its arrangement is flexible enough to accommodate various temporary exhibitions. With the specific exception of the print room, all galleries are lit with carefully controlled natural light.
The building and site are literally and figuratively integrated. The new event room opens onto a formal lawn and sculpture garden, connecting inside to out. The curve of the addition echoes the bend of the adjacent river.
The quality of the addition and renovation allowed the museum’s accreditation. Our work at the museum continues. Most recently we converted part of the original building into an educational black box theater for Wittenberg University.
