Richard E. Lindner Athletic Center
University of Cincinnati
glaserworks was architect of record for the Athletic Center. Bernard Tschumi (New York) was the designer. The unusual form of the building results from the designer’s response to its tight site and from a structural diagrid, which was chosen to allow the building to span 140 feet in places to avoid placing columns in existing mechanicals rooms below.
A key feature of the design is a skylighted, five story atrium. New work includes locker rooms and showers below grade, a museum, and four floors of offices for the administration and staff. Also included in the building are student health services, a faculty club with dining facilities, a practice gymnasium and a state of the art auditorium.
The museum is unusual in that its contents are distributed throughout the five story atrium, rather than sealed off in a black box. Eva Maddox of Perkins and Will designed the Atrium Museum. LEED Certification has been awarded to the Athletic Center.
