Chinese Academy of Sciences
The design of the Chinese Academy of Sciences new Shanghai campus creates a world class research university and symbol of the region’s growth in high-tech fields within a rich, creative, humane and environmentally responsible environment. Contemporary versions of traditional campus elements form a lively matrix connecting four academic colleges, a residential village and entrepreneurial and research facilities while providing varied contexts for academic and social life. A crescent facing the great lawn inflects toward the main entrance in a sign of welcome. Three distinct, radial “greens” provide hierarchy and reflect the character of the university’s three primary “neighborhoods”: academic, urban residential and recreational. A sheltered multi-purpose gallery connects the greens and colleges.
