Art Building Gallery Addition
Designed to house the Dimitrie Berea Gallery and collections, this addition links and mediates between two stylistically different buildings, one Georgian, the other collegiate modern. The entry portico, which shelters the doors and provides a transitional space between inside and out, recalls the traditional one of the adjacent Georgian building. There are analogies, too, between the formal composition of the gallery’s elevations and the symmetry and rationality of its neighbors. Similar materials, textures and colors help weave the three buildings into a cohesive whole.
The gallery’s entrance terminates a major axis along the front of the campus, imbuing the art complex with a formality appropriate to its place on campus and emphasizing its importance. On an important practical level, the new addition provides handicapped access to both existing buildings.
